Cable EMF Assessment

Where a circuit runs close to a boundary, a footpath, an occupied building or a third party asset, somebody will eventually ask what the magnetic field is at that point. The calculation is straightforward once the geometry and the currents are fixed. The value is in doing it before the route is committed, when the answer can still change the design cheaply.

When You Need It

  • · A route passes near a boundary, dwelling, footpath or workplace and exposure has to be demonstrated
  • · A planning condition or a client specification sets a field limit
  • · A third party asset owner has raised EMF as an objection
  • · Two route options are being compared and field is one of the deciding factors

Standards Applied

ICNIRP guidelinesIEC 62110CIGRE TB 373

The report states the clause and the edition it works to, so the calculation can be reproduced by whoever reviews it.

What You Get

Field magnitude at the points of interest, for the circuit loading stated
Lateral profile across the route, so the distance at which any limit is met is visible
The comparison against the applicable public and occupational limits
Where a limit is approached, the mitigation that works: formation, depth, spacing, or screening, with the effect of each quantified

Frequently Asked Questions

What current do you assess at?

Normally the maximum continuous rating, because that is the defensible worst case, and we will also report at the expected operating current if that is useful for the conversation with a third party.

Does formation make much difference?

Yes, a large one. Trefoil produces markedly less external field than flat formation at the same spacing, because the three phases sit closer to cancelling. It is often the cheapest mitigation available.

Request a Cable Sizing Study

A free calculator answers one question at standard conditions. A study takes the actual route, burial depth, soil resistivity, grouping and load profile, and gives you a signed report you can issue to the DNO or the client. We take single calculations as readily as full cable system designs.
